Abstract

This research aims to identify the difficulties Indonesian workers in Hong Kong face when speaking English and how they overcome these challenges. The study focuses on two workers, Mrs. L from PT. Dwi Citra Tri Patria and Mrs. A from PT. Bakti Persada Jaya, both aged 20-40 and working as maids. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 questions: 9 about the difficulties of speaking English and 5 about overcoming these difficulties. The findings revealed that Mrs. A and Mrs. L experienced all the previously identified challenges, along with new ones such as less understanding. Additionally, the research discovered new strategies for overcoming these challenges, including using body language, being taught by their employers, using Google Translate, receiving written and visual instructions from employers, and visiting tutoring centers during holidays. In summary, this research identified both existing and new difficulties faced by Indonesian workers in Hong Kong and uncovered innovative strategies they use to overcome these challenges.
