Abstract

This research purpose is specifically to know the demotivating factors faced by the students in learning English during the coronavirus disease (covid-19) pandemic at the first grade students in one of Junior High School in Kuningan. The research performes a sequential explanatory mixed method survey that display a descriptive analysis of quantitative data and an in depth understanding through qualitative data. The data were collected by questionnaire and interview. The quantitative data collection was modified from the ATMB “ Attitude/Motivation Test Battery” by Gardner (2004). The subject of this research is the first grade students. Based on the result of data analysis, there were four demotivating factors faced by the students in learning English during the coronavirus disease (covid-19) pandemic, that are intrinsic motivation, teachers and teaching styles, learning environment and learning materials. Out of four demotivating factors, intrinsic motivation become the most dominantly factors that is faced by the students in learning English during the coronavirus disease (covid-19) pandemic with the percentage is 88,25% and a very high interpretation score. The second came from teacher and teaching style with the percentage 83,75% and a high interpretation score. The third is related to the learning materials with the percentage 82,75% and a high interpretation score. The last from the environmental with the percentage 81,75% and a high interpretation score. Finally, the researcher suggested that in teaching and learning English especially in online learning during pandemic, the teacher should know the appropriate teaching and learning process used by the teacher and bring out more creative and relaxed atmosphere in teaching English during the coronavirus disease (covid-19) pandemic.
