Abstract

Bedog Taraju is a traditional Sundanese blade weapon produced across generations since the 18th century in Taraju Village, Kuningan Regency, embodying local wisdom values that reflect a strong work ethic, perseverance, and a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. However, the declining number of craftsmen, weak knowledge transmission, and limited visual documentation increasingly threaten the survival of this cultural heritage. This study aims to visualize these local wisdom values through documentary photography and to design them into an information medium that strengthens cultural awareness, particularly among the younger generation aged 16–30. The research employs a qualitative method with a visual ethnography approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, literature studies, and documentation, subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The design process applies the Double Diamond Design Thinking problem-solving method, encompassing the stages of Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver, structured through three production phases: pre-production, production, and post-production. The analysis identified four main themes: patience and precision, harmony with nature, community solidarity, and cultural continuity. The resulting work is a Visual Documentary Photobook in Coffee Table Book format titled "Bedog Taraju: Tradisi & Waktu," supported by complementary media including print photos, a booklet, poster, x-banner, video, and a microsite. The findings demonstrate that documentary photography is effective in communicating intangible cultural values visually, bridging local wisdom and public awareness in the digital era.
