Abstract

This research investigates how emphatic stress functions as a linguistic strategy for expressing emotional solidarity and mutual support among women in digital communication, particularly in Instagram comments.. The study aims to identify the most frequently occurring types of emphatic stress and their communicative functions. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, analyzing 206 comments selected purposively. The data were categorized based on the theory of Ginarti, Widyasari, and Wilyandri Sukma about types and functions of emphatic stress. The analysis revealed that single groups were the most dominant with 62.1% (128 occurrences), followed by duplets at 32.5% (67 occurrences), triplets at 4.9% (10 occurrences), and quartets at 0.5% (1 occurrence). Regarding functions, emphatic stress was most commonly used to express an opinion (12.6%), followed by to strengthen the word (55.1%), to add dramatic effect (28.1%), and to clarify (4.2%). These findings indicate that emphatic stress in online communication serves as a powerful tool to convey emotion and intention, particularly in informal, expressive contexts such as social media comments. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of digital language features and their pragmatic implications in online discourse.
