Liberal feminism is a perspective that states that giving women equal rights and opportunities is enough to eliminate gender injustice caused by the traditional gender roles. In the movie entitled “Barbie” that was released in 2023 represents liberal feminism portrait in Barbie characters. This research used Roland Barthes
semiotics theory with Tong’s liberal feminism framework to identify how Barbie’s character represents the liberal feminism in Barbie the Movie. Qualitative method with case study approach was the primary methodology of this research. The data collection in this research by watching the whole “Barbie” the movie from internet platform, screen shooting and marking at the specific time that shows the portrayal liberal feminism in Barbie characters. In previous studies, no one has conducted research with the object of the ‘Barbie’ movie using Roland Barthes' semiotics with Tong's liberal feminism framework. The results show that are 23 pictures that shows the portrayal of liberal feminism in the Barbie characters. Barbie is portrayed as a woman who is not bound by the institution of marriage, has no children and does not exist to satisfy men and Barbie living in a utopian world where they can be whatever they want, free from societal oppression.
