Abstract

Indonesia has a rich cultural heritage, one of which is wayang golek, a traditional puppet art form originating from West Java. In wayang golek performances, there are Punakawan characters such as Semar, Cepot, Dawala, and Gareng who serve not only as entertainers but also as messengers of moral values and life lessons. However, in the modern era, children's interest in traditional culture has declined due to the dominance of modern popular culture. This study aims to design an illustrated storybook as an educational medium to introduce the Punakawan characters of wayang golek to children aged 9–12. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was used. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The design process follows Bryan Lawson’s five stages of design: problem, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and solution. The result of this study is an illustrated storybook with a cartoon-style visual approach tailored to the world of children. The visualization of each Punakawan character is adapted to their unique traits and presented in an engaging, informative, and child-friendly manner. The book has proven effective as a medium for introducing local culture and increasing children's interest in wayang golek as part of Indonesia's cultural heritage.
