Abstract: This study investigates the translation techniques and translation Equivalence used to render sarcasm in the Indonesian subtitles of the film Deadpool & Wolverine. Using the framework proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), this research aims to identify the translation techniques employed in the movie’s subtitles and evaluate the translation equivalence based on Nida’s theory (1974), which classifies equivalence into formal and dynamic. The study adopts a qualitative with case study design, analyzing 79 sarcastic utterances collected from the film and its official subtitles.The findings reveal that 13 out of 18 translation techniques were used, with the most frequently applied is triplets. There are 6 grouping translation techniques combinations; 7 cases (8.86%) used a single technique, 23 cases (29.11%) used two techniques (duplets), 29 cases (36.71%) used three (triplets), 13 cases (16.46%) used four (quartets), 5 cases (6.33%) used five (quintets), and 2 cases (2.53%) employed six techniques (sextets). In terms of translation equivalence, the study found that 93.67% of the data were translated using dynamic equivalence, indicating that the translators prioritized naturalness, tone, and audience impact over literal accuracy. Only 6.33% of the data employed formal equivalence. This research contributes to the field of audiovisual translation by providing insight into how sarcasm can be effectively translated across languages and cultures. It offers practical implications for translators, subtitlers, and linguists working with humor and cultural adaptation in film, highlighting the importance of balancing fidelity with functional equivalence to ensure audience comprehension and engagement.
