Abstract

he Javan Trogon (Apalharpactes reinwardtii) is a Javan endemic species categorized as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. This study aimed to map habitat suitability and identify the environmental factors most influential in determining the distribution of the Javan Trogon in the Batu Naga Bukit Pembarisan Forest Area, which is designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Habitat suitability modeling was conducted using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) version 3.4.4 with 50 bootstrap replicates and a 25% random test percentage. Presence data were collected through field surveys using the transect walk method, yielding 41 occurrence records. Seven environmental variables were used as predictors: elevation, slope, annual rainfall, distance from rivers, distance from roads, land cover, and vegetation density (NDVI). The model demonstrated very high accuracy, with a mean Training AUC of 0.954 ± 0.009 and a Test AUC of 0.932, with a marginal difference of 0.022 indicating the absence of overfitting. Modeling results revealed that of the total study area of 2,648.32 ha, highly suitable habitat covered only 63.80 ha (2.40%) and moderately suitable habitat covered 96.93 ha (3.64%), both concentrated in the central-southern zone at the highest elevations with intact primary forest cover. Elevation was the most dominant variable, contributing 52.6%, followed by slope (17.9%), rainfall (8.9%), distance from rivers (8.7%), distance from roads (5.6%), land cover (3.6%), and vegetation density (2.7%). The optimal habitat preference of this species occurs at elevations above 1,300 m asl. These findings confirm that the Javan Trogon is highly dependent on montane forest conditions characterized by high elevation, gentle slopes, optimal rainfall, proximity to water sources, dense vegetation, and minimal anthropogenic disturbance.
