Abstract
Population growth and infrastructure development in Kuningan Regency in the 2015-2025 period have the potential to cause changes in land cover resulting in a decrease in vegetation density and an increase in land surface temperature, thus triggering the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. This study aims to analyze changes in vegetation density, changes in land surface temperature, and examine the effect of changes in vegetation density on changes in land surface temperature. This study uses a spatial analysis design based on Landsat 8 Level-2 Collection 2 Tier 1 imagery in 2015, 2020, and 2025 obtained from the USGS. Vegetation density is analyzed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land surface temperature is analyzed using Land Surface Temperature (LST), and UHI is identified based on changes in LST values. The relationship between variables is tested using simple linear regression. The results showed a significant increase in the high vegetation class from 39.552 ha (2015) to 62.260 ha (2025) and the very high class from 1.426 ha to 31.115 ha, while the low vegetation class decreased from 28.035 ha to 1.953 ha. This change was followed by a decrease in the area of the very high temperature class from 78.414 ha (2015) to 20.117 ha (2025) and a shift in temperature distribution to lower classes. Although Kuningan Regency is dominated by non-UHI areas, the UHI phenomenon is still identified in built-up areas and activity centers with minimal vegetation. The results of the regression test showed an inverse relationship between NDVI and LST values with a fairly strong level of relationship strength (R² = 0.3216), emphasizing the important role of vegetation in reducing ground surface heat.
