Abstract

Mayasih Urban Forest and Caracas Urban Forest represent vital urban green areas established to reduce air pollution and offer crucial habitats for various animal and plant species. Butterfly diversity is recognized as an excellent indicator of ecosystem health within a region, sensitive to environmental variables like temperature, humidity, light intensity, altitude, and the availability of larval host and adult food plants. Data collection, conducted in May 2025, employed the Point Count and transect methods, utilizing 20m x 20m plots. The study revealed a combined total of 25 butterfly species, accounting for 141 individuals across 4 families, inhabiting these two urban forests. Specifically, Caracas Urban Forest yielded 17 species with 54 individuals, whereas Mayasih Urban Forest showed a greater richness with 22 butterfly species and 87 individuals. The butterfly species diversity index for Mayasih Urban Forest was notably higher at H'=2.72, while Caracas Urban Forest recorded H'=2.65, both classified as moderate diversity. Environmental readings in Caracas Urban Forest included a temperature of 30°C, 80% humidity, and a light intensity of 7344 lux at an elevation of 446 meters above sea level. Conversely, Mayasih Urban Forest exhibited a temperature of 28°C, 85% humidity, and a light intensity of 6965 lux at an elevation of 704 meters above sea level.
