POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN INDONESIAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES DEBATE 2024: DEFENSE - GEOPOLITICS.

Abstract
Nowadays is the era when Indonesians are practicing democracy, namely the election of presidential and vice presidential candidates. This research aims to examine types and factors influence the use of politeness strategies used by speakers in Indonesian presidential candidates debate 2024: defense – geopolitics. The data source were taken from KompasTv YouTube channel. The researcher used theory of Brown & Levinson (1987), there are four types of politeness strategies, namely bald on-record, positive, negative, and off-record. According to Brown & Levinson (1987), there are two factors influence to use politeness strategies, namely payoffs and relevant circumstance.Which is divided into 3, namely social distance, relative power, and rank of imposition. This study employed a qualitative approach in order to answer the research objectives. The result shows there are 362 utterances of politeness strategies used by speakers, in details: Anies (123), Prabowo (98), and Ganjar (141). Participants used four types of politeness startegies in this debate session. The most dominant type used by speakers is positive politeness with 56.9% (206 out of 362), followed by negative politeness 15.7% (57 out of 362), off-record 14.6% (53 out of 362). The least dominant type used by speakers is bald on-record, with 12.8% (46 out of 362). This research has same findings with politeness strategies used in presidential candidates debate 2019, which positive politeness is the most dominant types used by speakers. It can be conclude that Indonesians tend to use positive politeness in express their opinions to attract the attention of hearers. The two factors influence speakers to use politeness strategies, those are payosffs and relevant circumstances. Payoffs happens when speakers try to get recognition, build common ground and mutual desire with hearers. In the other hands, relevant circumstances related with PDI.
